Immigration : F1 : Full-Time Enrollment

Full-Time Enrollment

F-1 students are required to maintain full time status while studying in the US. This means registering full time beginning of the semester through the end of the semester. Dropping below full time is a status violation so please read the information carefully, including notes, so that you do not jeopardize your status. Since you are responsible for your immigration status, please see an advisor before considering dropping below full time. This is especially important when your academic or faculty advisor recommends or suggests you drop or change your grading.

[F-1 Undergraduate Student]
A minimum of 12 units every Fall and Spring semester

[F-1 Graduate Student]

  • 9 units every Fall and Spring semester; or,
  • 6 units every Fall and Spring semester if a student is engaged in paid university assistantships; or,
  • 3 units at the 900 level of thesis or dissertation units every Fall and Spring semester if a student has completed all course work and ONLY has thesis or dissertation units left to complete the degree (student is required to submit a "Graduate Coursework Completion Form” which must be approved and signed by an academic advisor to ISPS prior to the first day of semester)

Important:

If a student begins his or her program during summer (pre-session, I or II), he or she must register for a minimum of 1 unit in the beginning summer term in which they were admitted and maintain full-time enrollment during summer. See Summer Enrollment for details.

Note 1: All students at all times must be making normal progress toward their designated degree

Note 2: Winter and Summer sessions are not required for full-time enrollment unless they are a student’s first term to begin their program or to return to their program after leave of absence

Note 3: Some departments may require additional units based on a student’s individual program for academic purposes

Note 4: Summer and winter classes will not count toward full-time enrollment in the Spring and Fall semesters

Note 5: Audit and correspondence classes will not count toward full-time enrollment

Note 6: Only one class or three credits of Web-based class will count toward full-time enrollment (Web-based class is not the same as a correspondence class)

Note 7: A grade of A, B, C, D, E, F, I (incomplete) will count toward full-time enrollment, however, a grade of W (withdraw) does not
