Immigration : F1 : Dependant (F-2)

Dependant (F-2)

 

Spouse and minor children (under 21 years old) of an F-1 student shall each be issued an individual Form I-20 (known as F-2 Form I-20). F-2 dependent may not engage in study at the University of Arizona. F-2 child may only engage in full-time study if the study is in an elementary or secondary school (kindergarten through twelfth grade). F-2 dependent may engage in study that is avocational or recreational in nature (e.g., crafts, Yoga, etc.). F-2 dependent may not engage in any type of employment.

Important:

F-2 dependent must obtain his or her own F-2 Form I-20 and F-2 visa (except for Canadians) in order to lawfully enter/remain in the U.S.

Required Documents (all must be valid and original copy) at ISPS:

  • Document Request Form
  • Form I-20 (for an F-1 student)
  • Funding letter for the amount indicated on Document Request Form. Funding letter must not be more than 6 months old
  • Dependent Information (included in Document Request Form)

What You Need To Do:

  • Step 1: Submit all required documents to the ISPS front desk
  • Step 2: Wait for email from ISPS (if you don’t hear from ISPS after 10 business days of submission, call at 621-4627 to check your application status)
  • Step 3: Pick up new I-20s (for yourself and dependents) at the ISPS front desk
  • Step 4: F-2 dependent obtains an F-2 visa (check with the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy about procedure)
  • Step 5: Bring a copy of stamped F-1 and F-2 Form I-20s, F-2 visa (except for Canadians), Form I-94, and passport to ISPS as soon as you have entered the U.S.

Note 1: Normal processing time at ISPS is 10 business days after receipt of complete documents

Note 2: F-1 student must notify ISPS if his or her F-2 dependent is no longer maintaining an F-2 status (e.g., change of status approved, departure from the U.S., etc.)

Note 3: All changes in the F-1 status will automatically reflect on the F-2 status (e.g., termination, program extension, change of address, etc.)
