Dependent (J-2)

 

Spouse and minor children (under 21 years old) of a J-1 student shall each be issued an individual Form DS2019. J-2 dependent may engage in study, full time or part time at the University of Arizona or other educational institutions upon admission. J-2 child may engage in full-time study at an elementary or secondary school (kindergarten through twelfth grade. J-2 dependent may also engage in any type of employment. See the form I-765 for additional information and application for employment authorization.

Important:

J-2 dependent must obtain his or her own J-2 Form DS2019 and J-2 visa (except for Canadians) in order to lawfully enter/remain in the U.S.

J-1 students are responsible for acquiring health insurance for the duration of dependents’ stay in the US. Proof of insurance must be submitted to ISPS upon dependent arrival and maintenance of that insurance for extensions of DS2019. Failure to not maintain health insurance for J-2 dependents will result in termination of both J-1 and J-2 DS2019 and status and cannot be reinstated.

Required Documents for applying for J-2 dependent DS2019 (all must be valid and original copy) at ISPS:

  • Document Request Form
  • Form DS2019 (for an J-1 student)
  • Funding letter for the amount indicated on Document Request Form. Funding letter must not be more than 6 months old
  • Dependent Information (included in Document Request Form)

What You Need To Do:

  • Step 1: Submit all required documents to the ISPS front desk
  • Step 2: Wait for email from ISPS (if you don’t hear from ISPS after 10 business days of submission, call at 621-4627 to check your application status)
  • Step 3: Pick up new I-20s (for yourself and dependents) at the ISPS front desk
  • Step 4: J-2 dependent obtains an J-2 visa (check with the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy about procedure)
  • Step 5: Bring a copy of stamped J-2 Form DS2019, J-2 visa (except for Canadians), Form I-94, and passport to ISPS as soon as any dependents have entered the U.S.


Note 1: Normal processing time at ISPS is 10 business days after receipt of complete documents

Note 2: J-1 student must notify ISPS if his or her J-2 dependent is no longer maintaining an J-2 status (e.g., change of status approved, departure from the U.S., etc.)

Note 3: All changes in the J-1 status will automatically reflect on the J-2 status (e.g., termination, program extension, change of address, etc.)

Note 4: If DS2019 was issued by other than UA, then please consult with your program sponsor on requirements to bring dependents to the US
