Immigration : J1 : Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent Enrollment

The classes offered at the Pima Community College may satisfy some UA undergraduate course requirements. Students with DS2019 issued from UA may seek permission from RO/ARO at ISPS to take classes at Pima. These classes are usually limited to math or English courses that are not available at UA following placement tests. Third party sponsored students must seek permission from program sponsor to take classes at Pima.

Concurrent enrollment allows students to take classes at Pima while fulfilling immigration requirements of maintaining full time enrollment of 12 units. If a J-1 student plans to take classes at the Pima Community College, he or she must obtain a concurrent enrollment authorization at ISPS prior to class registration at the Pima Community College. ISPS advisor will review eligibility based on transferability of the units toward degree requirements. ISPS will work with you and program sponsor to confirm eligibility.

LATE START CLASSES at the Pima Community College will not count toward a full-time enrollment and will jeopardize your immigration status. Late start classes for Fall semester means classes which begin at Pima in mid-September or after. Late start classes for Spring semester means classes which begin at Pima late January or after. Late start classes will not be authorized for concurrent enrollment unless a student has been maintaining a minimum of 12 units.

What You Need To Do:

  • Step 1:  Register for a minimum of 6 units at the University of Arizona for the term you are seeking to enroll at Pima Community College
  • Step 2:  Download form
Fill out the top part of the form and sign section ‘B’ at the bottom of the form
UA Academic Advisor fills out and signs section ‘A’
  • Step 3:  Submit completed Concurrent Enrollment Form to ISPS front desk
  • Step 4: ISPS advisor reviews request and determines eligibility. Once approved, ISPS advisor faxes form to Pima and emails student confirming that the request has been approved. If the request is not approved, ISPS will email explanation of the denial
  • Step 5:  Register for your classes at Pima Community College.
  • Step 6:  At the end of every term attending Pima Community College and after grades are posted, submit a copy of unofficial Pima transcript generated by Pima International Student Office. This will ensure proper confirmation of full time enrollment. To receive UA credit for those units, you will need to request an Official Transcript to be sent to UA Registrar’s office.

FAILURE TO SUBMIT TRANSCRIPT TO ISPS AT THE END OF THE TERM WILL RESULT IN
VIOLATION OF YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS

Note 1:  Normal processing time at ISPS is 3 business days after receipt of completed concurrent enrollment form

Note 2: If a student plans to change his or her schedule after submitting a concurrent enrollment form, the student must re-submit a new form listing all courses he or she plans to enroll (New form will overwrite any old forms previously submitted for the same term)

Note 3: Sponsored students requests will be reviewed by ISPS Sponsor programs to review agency approval and discuss responsibility for payment

Note 4: International Undergraduate Scholarship students must take 12 units at the University of Arizona every Fall and Spring semester. Courses at Pima must be beyond 12 units at the UA.

Note 5: Concurrent enrollment form is also required for summer and winter sessions

Note 6: Summer and winter classes will not count toward full-time enrollment in either spring or fall semesters

Note 7: Graduate students are not allowed to take classes at the Pima Community College unless he or she maintains a full-time enrollment at the University of Arizona (except for summer)

Note 8: Concurrent enrollment for a student’s last term will not be approved unless he or she registers for a minimum of 6 units (3units for applicable summer term) at the University of Arizona
