The following employment information pertains to J-1 students in the categories of Student Bachelors, Student Masters, Student Doctorate and Student Non-Degree.
[On-Campus Work] J-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week during Fall and Spring semesters with written permission from ISPS. During winter, spring and summer breaks, a student is allowed to work up to 40 hours per week. However, UA policy may only allow 30 hours per week depending on enrollment and term during these official breaks.
Upon initial entry to begin a new program, a student may not begin on-campus employment more than 30 days prior to the first day of classes. In the case of a transfer student, he or she may only engage in on-campus employment after receiving a new Form DS2019 at the University of Arizona or valid DS2019 from program sponsor. If the program sponsor (item #2 on the DS2019) is an entity other than UA, the student will need to contact the sponsor regarding permission to work on-campus.
Some off-campus locations are treated as on-campus sites if they are directly owned by the University of Arizona or have strong educational affiliation. If a student is unsure whether his or her work site is considered on-campus, he or she should speak with an ISPS advisor for clarification.
Important:
The Responsible or Alternate Responsible Officer at ISPS must approve employment in advance and in writing.
What You Need To Do:
- Step 1: Submit J-1 Student Employment Authorization form to ISPS
- Step 2: ISPS will email you when the authorization form is ready for pick up at ISPS front desk
- Step 3: Submit approved form to your UA department so that they may proceed with the hiring process. The department is responsible for submitting a copy of the form with the I-9 to the Financial Services Office.
