Change of Degree Level

If an F-1 student has changed his or her degree level, he or she must report it to ISPS within 10 days of the change and obtain a new Form I-20 showing a new degree level.

Important:

Procedure is slightly different between those who change from Bachelor to Master/PhD, those who change degree level but not major within the Graduate College, and those who change both major and degree level within the Graduate College.

[Change of degree level from Bachelor to Master/PhD]
Required Documents (all must be valid and original copy) at ISPS:
  • Document Request Form
  • All previously issued I-20 Forms
  • Funding letter (less than 6 months old) for the amount indicated on the document request form Additional funding may be required depending on College (example: Eller, Law, Pharmacy, etc)
  • A copy of official Admissions letter (This letter will be directly forwarded to ISPS from the Graduate Admissions Office)

What You Need To Do:

  • Step 1: Submit all required documents to the ISPS front desk
  • Step 2: Wait for email from ISPS (if you don’t hear from ISPS, call at 621-4627 to check your application status. See Note 1 below about the normal processing time)
  • Step 3: Pick up your new I-20

Note 1: Normal processing time at ISPS is 10 business days after receipt of complete documents (including a copy of official admissions letter). Processing time may vary depending on the date ISPS receives student’s official admissions letter from the Graduate Admissions Office.

Note 2:  For change of degree level but not major within the Graduate College, a copy of admissions letter is not generated. However, ISPS must be able to confirm change of degree level in the UA Student Information System prior to issuing a new Form I-20.
